In a sympathetic community of writers, we will dive into the deep waters of the self and the unexplored riches of each person’s written work. We will experiment with language and form. This workshop can help writers of memoir and family stories, fiction, a collection of poetry, character sketches and hybrid forms. We will read, discuss, write and offer each other honest generous feedback. Sister Mara will read and respond to your writing and be available for individual conferences.

Beginning at the Spirituality Center, join us on a sacred journey as we reflect on the “saints” in our lives to celebrate All Saints and All Souls Days. The pilgrimage will take us around sacred spaces on the campus of Saint Benedict’s Monastery. You are welcome to join us for Midday Prayer and a noon meal following the pilgrimage. Free will offering accepted. Optional noon meal is $12.

How can we stay grounded in our experience, more fully realizing that God accompanies us during tough times? We will explore the Benedictine practice of stability by learning to practice self-compassion, knowing that “Where I am is where God is for me.”

We will reflect together on the short mystical poem “The Ladder of Divine Graces” attributed to Theophanis, a monk of the Christian East, which offers us a path to union with God. Rooted in the Incarnation and our experiences rather than creeds, rites, ethics or abstract thought and concepts, it contains the distillation of over 1,000 years of spiritual teaching and discipline packed into 71 lines of verse.

Gather to share common prayer of lectio divina (prayerful reading) using the Gospels of the Sundays of Advent. Meet virtually with a sister spiritual companion for 30 minutes. Participants will need access to a computer, smart phone or device with Zoom capability.

Celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception by pondering selections of Sister Thomas Carey’s depictions of Mary. The co-curators will lead us to Saint Benedict’s Monastery Permanent Art Collection to help us explore the depth of S. Thomas’ work by looking at ways she employed materials, techniques and visual language to transform these elements into spiritually profound meditations. Come for beauty, contemplation and inspiration to honor Mary, a woman uniquely blessed by God among us.
