In the spirit of “small town warmth and big city cool,” we’re shining a light on a remarkable St. Joseph business that embodies just that.

In 2002, two friends—Shantel Jaszcak and Lisa Kampfer—set out to make a difference. They saw how hard it was for families to manage care for loved ones, so they built Consumer Directions around a simple but powerful idea: empower people to direct their own care. What started small has grown into a thriving business that now serves over 3,000 individuals, helping them hire 5,000+ caregivers, often family or friends. All while staying true to their roots in Saint Joseph.

More than two decades later, Consumer Directions has over 72 employees and a brand-new headquarters right here in St. Joe’s business park. But despite their scale, they’ve kept that small-town feel at the heart of everything they do. Their team leads with compassion, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to the people they serve. “YOU MATTER. WE CARE.” isn’t just a tagline—it’s how they show up every day.

This women-founded, community-driven company is proof that big things can grow in small towns—especially when they’re rooted in love, friendship, and a deep desire to serve others. Whether helping parents stay home with their kids or simplifying care for aging loved ones, Shantel and Lisa’s vision continues to change lives across Minnesota.
